28 August 2006 DUBAI — Apple Middle East (ME) says the battery recall the computer giant issued two days ago for Mac notebook batteries is going according to plan. The company asked customers worldwide to return 1.8 million batteries that were causing some laptops to overheat and, on rare occasions, even catch fire.
The cells in the lithium-ion batteries in the two models (iBook G4 and PowerBook G4) affected by the recall were produced by a Sony subsidiary in Japan. Apple has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from the overheated batteries.
The recall affected 1.1 million batteries in the US and 700,000 batteries abroad, and came 10 days after Dell’s recall of 4.1 million similar faulty batteries. The Apple computers were sold from October 2003 through this month. Apple refused to give any insight on how many people in the Middle East are affected by the flawed batteries.
“The recall in the Middle East is going well,” said Breoj Jos service assistant of Apple ME. “The hot weather conditions in the UAE do not affect the amount of batteries coming back from customers, as most of these laptops are used inside the house”, Jos said. Apple consumers with affected products should stop using the recalled batteries and contact Apple for a replacement battery, free of charge. It will take “around two weeks time” for the new batteries to arrive at the customers.
