Beweging in ontvoeringszaak Gilad Shalit

Na weken van stilte zit er weer wat beweging in de zaak Gilad Shalit, de door Hamas ontvoerde Israelische soldaat die in de Gazastrook wordt vastgehouden. Een Hamas-functionaris heeft de krant Yediot Ahronot laten weten dat de groepering weer onderhandelt met Israel over het lot van van de soldaat. Egypte bemiddelt tussen beide partijen. Shalit wordt inmiddels al bijna achtien maanden vastgehouden.
De eisen van Hamas blijven vrijwel hetzelfde. Israel moet 450 Hamas-gevangenen vrijlaten in ruil voor Shalit. Daarover was begin 2007 al overeenstemming bereikt. De ruil liep uiteindelijk stuk op de vraag welke gevangenen Israel zou laten gaan. Veel van hen zijn verantwoordelijk voor het plannen of plegen van terreur-acties tegen Israel.
Volgens Yediot Ahronot is Hamas iets van zijn oorspronkelijke voorgaande lijn afgeweken. De beweging is bereid over dat aantal vrijlatingen te onderhandelen als Israel de boycot tegen de Gazastrook opheft.

The organization denied previous report of progress maid in the effort to secure Shalit’s return to Israel: The Red Cross in Gaza announced recently they were able to convince Hamas to let them meet with the captive soldier and take back a letter to his family.
“There are no concrete discussions,” said Hamas at the time, adding the group was waiting for “a proper offer” in return.
Noam Shalit, Gilad’s father, slammed what he called the government’s failure to retrieve his son: “The bottom line is that come Monday, it will be 18 months since Gilad was captured. I’m not privy to the working of Israeli intelligence – that’s not my job – all I know is that my son is still out there.”
Earlier Saturday Former Shin Bet head and Security Cabinet member Minister Ami Ayalon (Labor-Meimad) said that the IDF cannot launch a rescue operation to recover Shalit at this time due to “intelligence failure.”
“We simply do not have the sufficient intelligence at this time… that is the only thing preventing us from going ahead with a rescue right now,” said Ayalon.
