Smokkeltunnels Gaza snel gerepareerd

RAFAH – Philadelphi Road, de grensstrook tussen Egypte en de Gazastrook, is niet meer wat hij geweest is. De roodbruine grond aan de rand van de stad Rafah is zwaar omgewoeld door de drie weken durende bommencampagne van de Israëlische luchtmacht. Als het doel was de smokkeltunnels onder de grens tussen Egypte en de Gazastrook te vernietigen, is dat maar ten dele gelukt.
Op de bodem van een vijf meter diepe krater staan Ali (15) en Bassem (16) te overleggen hoe ze de ingang van een van de tunnels kunnen herstellen. De houten planken van de fundering zijn als luciferhoutjes afgebroken. Om hen heen liggen grote brokstukken van het huis waar de tunnel op uitkwam voordat het werd gebombardeerd. ,,Eigenlijk staan we hier in de kelder,” zegt Ali, terwijl hij zijn schep in de aarde steekt. Abbas has lost the last of his credit

The popularity of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has fallen to an all-time low. Many West Bank Palestinians say that Abbas (73) has lost contact with the people, even in his own town of Ramallah.
On friday after the end of afternoon prayers, Ramallah’s central square begins to fill with people demonstrating against the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip. The crowd chants Palestinian songs and slogans. “In the name of God, we are all Palestinian. Death to Israel.”
Suddenly panic breaks out and people begin to run. Tear-gas hovers above the central square as Palestinian Authority security forces arrest demonstrators. Someone was said to have been waving a Hamas flag. The Palestinian Authority does not tolerate the display of Hamas signals or the shouting of pro-Hamas slogans. Read more

Gaza war also waged online

The Israeli army includes a well-oiled propaganda apparatus. Women are the gender of choice for spokespersons because of their supposed softer image. And foreign journalists are bombarded with emails and text messages providing news coverage from an Israeli perspective.
War also rages on the internet. A tough on-line battle to influence public opinion is being fought in the shadow of the Israeli offensive. Both sides have become masters in the art of cyber warfare. Without let-up, photographs, videos and text are posted on the internet. However, it is the Arab digital world which has perfected the production of on-line propaganda to an art form.
Thousands of e-mails including the most horrific photographs of the Gaza Strip conflict are circulating in the Arab world. They also include photographs of dead Palestinian children, their small bodies completely destroyed. The captions read “Zionists are Nazis. Read more

Israël treft VN-scholen: 43 doden

ROTTERDAM/JERUZALEM – Bij hun opmars in Gaza hebben Israëlische troepen dinsdag VN-scholen onder vuur genomen. Daarbij vielen volgens Palestijnse bronnen veertig doden. Onder hen zouden veel kinderen zijn.
Een Israëlische woordvoerder zei dat vanuit de school was geschoten op militairen. Die schoten terug, waarop een explosie volgde, mogelijk veroorzaakt door in de school opgeslagen munitie. Vele andere bronnen spreken echter van een Israëlische luchtaanval.
De aanval op de school in Jabaliya was de tweede op een VN- school. De VN zeiden dat bij een tankbeschieting op een school in het vluchtelingenkamp Shati bij Gaza-stad drie doden vielen. In de scholen zaten honderden burgers die dachten veilig te zijn voor het geweld.
De humanitaire crisis in de Gazastrook is na elf dagen van Israëlische belegering compleet. Hulpverleners in het gebied luiden de noodklok. ,,De situatie is hopeloos.’’ Jenny Linnel, een Britse medewerkster van International Solidarity Movement, zag het aanvankelijk als haar taak om de Israëlische aanvallen op de Gaza-strook te documenteren. Inmiddels verleent ze, zoals meer mensenrechtenactivisten, directe hulp. ,,Ik help ambulancepersoneel om het enorme aantal gewonden te verzorgen,’’ zegt Linnel vanuit Rafah, in het zuiden van Gaza.
