NYT: U.S. confirms IDF strike on Sudan convoy

American officials have confirmed rumors that Israel Air Force warplanes attacked a convoy of Iranian arms passing through Sudan en route to the Gaza Strip in Sudan in January, The New York Times reported on Friday.
Officials apprised of classified intelligence assessments said that Israel carried out aerial attack as part of its effort to combat the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip, according to The Times.

Honderden mensen zijn volgens bronnen in Soedan in januari gedood bij een bombardement op een een konvooi vrachtwagens in de Soedanese woestijn. De vrachtwagens, volgeladen met wapens uit Iran, zouden onderweg zijn naar Gaza om Hamas te bewapenen.
Andere zegslieden spreken van 37 dodelijke slachtoffers. Er is onduidelijkheid over wie de aanval heeft uitgevoerd. De Soedanese autoriteiten wijzen naar de Verenigde Staten, terwijl het Amerikaanse televisiestation CBS de verantwoordelijkheid legt bij Israël.

Israeli soldiers shot and killed Palestinian civilians at random during the offensive in the Gaza Strip. Such were the revelations that emerged at a military academy meeting, where veterans of the offensive unburdened their consciences. The information that leaked out echoes the horrific accounts that Palestinians gave to RNW correspondent David Poort.
The transcripts of the soldiers’ statements were leaked to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, where excerpts of the text were published. The conclusion that the soldiers were permitted to shoot at anything that moved, including civilians, has sparked an outcry.
The soldiers’ confessions echo the eyewitness accounts I heard from Palestinians shortly after the Gaza offensive. Many of those accounts have not yet been published because they could not be verified by other sources. They were often so incredibly horrific that a journalist was powerless to act on them without independent corroboration.

تسرب محضر لقاء خريجي الأكاديمية العسكرية الذي تم في تيفون الإسرائيلية إلى جريدة هآرتس التي نشرت قسما منه. والخلاصة التي تم التوصل إليها هي أن الجنود قد تلقوا الأوامر بإطلاق النار على كل ما يتحرك، وحتى المدنيون منهم، هذه الخلاصة أدت إلى إثارة ضجة قوية
اعترافات الجنود تطابقت مع ما سمعته من العديد من الفلسطينيين فور توقف الحرب على قطاع غزة. العديد من هذه القصص لم أنشرها سابقا لعدم توفر مصادر منوعة للتأكد من صحتها. معظم القصص كانت مرعبة لدرجة لا تصدق وتجعل الصحافي يشعر بعجزه عن الحصول على تأكيد لها من مصادر مستقلة
استوقفني منظر رجل يبكي على أنقاض منزله قرب مخيم جباليا، خالد عبد ربه وهو رجل شرطة في مدينة غزة. وقف قرب الأنقاض واخبرني أن الحي كان ساحة للحرب في السابع من كانون الثاني/ يناير. الدبابات الإسرائيلية طوقت الحي بعد قتال مع مقاتلي حماس. بواسطة مكبر للصوت أعطى الجنود الأمر لعائلة عبد ربه لمغادرة المنزل. خالد اخبرني كيف أن جنديا إسرائيليا أطلق النار وبكل دم بارد على ابنتيه آمال (سنتين) وسعاد (سبع سنوات) وقتلهما. أما ابنته الثالثة سمر (أربع سنوات) فقد أصيبت إصابات خطرة وترقد في المستشفى. بكل أسف اضطررت إلى عدم نشر هذه القصة المروعة Read more

Het ‘meest ethische leger ter wereld’

Israëlische militairen hebben tijdens de oorlog in de Gazastrook willekeurig Palestijnse burgers doodgeschoten. Dat verklaarden veteranen van oorlog tijdens een reünie op een militaire academie in de Israëlische plaats Tivon. Uitgebeid hebben de militairen hun geweten laten spreken. De notulen van de sessie zijn naar de Israëlische krant Haaretz gestuurd, die delen daarvan heeft gepubliceerd.
De verhalen van de soldaten sluiten aan bij de getuigenissen van Palestijnen die ik vlak na de oorlog in de Gazastrook heb opgetekend. Veel van die verhalen zijn niet gepubliceerd omdat ze niet met meerdere bronnen waren te verifiëren. Vaak waren de verhalen in hun gruwelijkheid zo ongeloofwaardig dat je als journalist met lege handen stond zonder onafhankelijke bevestiging.
