Wall football ad infuriates Palestinians

It lasts less than one minute, but a local telephone company’s television commercial is causing a furore in Israel. The controversial advert shows a fun game of football next to the security wall round the West Bank. It has led to a furious response from Palestinians.
Palestinian politicians are calling it disgusting and insulting. They are demanding it be withdrawn but Cellcom, the company behind the commercial, is not worried in the slightest.
Kicking a ball
The TV commercial kicks off with an Israeli army vehicle being struck by a ball from the other side of the wall. The soldiers decide to kick the ball back over. When the ball is immediately returned, they call for reinforcements. The scene develops into a friendly match between a whole army team and their unseen opponents on the other side of the wall.
The footie game ends with the pay-off: “When all’s said and done, what do we all want out of life? A bit of fun!” Read more

Oergezellig potje voetbal bij de Muur

Het duurt nog geen zestig seconden. Maar een tv-commercial van een lokale telefoonaanbieder zorgt voor opschudding in Israel. In het omstreden spotje zou de Muur rondom de Westelijke Jordaanoever op een relativerende manier geportretteerd worden, tot woede van de Palestijnen. Een vrolijk partijtje voetbal bij de Muur vinden ze ongepast.
Palestijnse politici noemen de spot walgelijk en kwetsend. Ze eisen dat de commercial uit de lucht wordt gehaald, maar Cellcom, het bedrijf dat het spotje liet maken, piekert daar niet over.
Balletje trappen
De tv-commercial begint met een scène waarin een Israëlisch legervoertuig op patrouille wordt geraakt door een voetbal die over de Muur komt zeilen. De soldaten besluiten de bal terug te trappen. Als direct daarna de bal opnieuw hun richting op komt, wordt er versterking ingeroepen en ontaardt het tafereel in een oergezellige voetbalmiddag voor het hele peloton. De onzichtbare tegenstander aan de andere kant van de Muur doet leuk mee.
Het spontane potje voetbal wordt afgesloten met de pay-off: “Wat willen we uiteindelijk allemaal in het leven? Een beetje lol hebben!” Read more

Support for illegal West Bank wall greater than ever

The wall around the occupied West Bank was declared illegal by the International Court of Justice precisely five years ago. The court called for the barrier to be broken down, but Israel ignored the ruling and continued to build. “Security above all else,” was the Israeli justification for the wall.
Support for the wall by the Israeli people is greater than ever. In Jerusalem in particular, many Israelis think the wall has proven to be an effective barrier against attacks. Since it was built there have been no large suicide attacks by Palestinians from the West Bank.

Slipping in unnoticed
The question is in how much the barrier has contributed. The wall is planned to be 750 kilometres long in total, but to date only 60 percent of it is complete. In the south of the West Bank, it is quite easy to slip into Israel unnoticed.
